Can You Learn Internet Marketing?

By PPC Mom

So many people say they want to learn internet marketing. They “dream” of it. They “hope” for it. They imagine huge wads of money arriving at their doorstep each and every day!

Everywhere you look you will see proof that millions of people everywhere are dreaming the same dream. That proof appears in the form of all kinds of ads popping at you everywhere you look. These ads are promising hope and possibility. They’re telling you that you can make a fortune by using their system, selling their products, or creating instant money making websites.

Whatever the offer is, they eventually convince hundreds of people to buy it. I know many of you reading this now have bought products that promised you the world. I receive emails about them almost every day.

What happens after you buy something like that?

30 days later, you’re still staring at your computer screen thinking…” I need to find an answer, because this last product didn’t work like I wanted, I’m sure I can find something easier…” Unfortunately, this cycle repeats itself over and over for many people. These people often feel “ripped off” or that internet marketing is a scam and no one really makes any money.

They may start to wonder…”Will I ever learn Internet Marketing? Will I ever make any money online?” Here is the truth, “The way you’re going, you’ll never make a dime…” I know it’s harsh, but I believe it’s true. If you are looking to a Guru or a Miracle Product to help you learn internet marketing, you are on the wrong track.

If you are struggling to learn internet marketing or to make any amount of money online, there are usually key reasons:

1. LACK OF FOCUS:  you have no direction and you are trying to make everything work all at once. (This has been a big problem for me!!) Everybody needs a mentor who can show you what to do and what not to do, so find yourself a good internet marketing mentor! And once you find someone who is successful and willing to share information with you, hang onto them! An experienced mentor willing to give their time to you, is a very rare thing and should be treasured.

2. LACK OF KNOWLEDGE: If you don’t know what you are doing, you won’t make money for long (if at all). It pays to know the technical side of internet marketing. Either learn it all on your own, or check out one of the high quality training sites around. I recommend AffiliIT as I believe their training to be fantastic for beginners to advanced. It’s a great place to learn internet marketing. Really, there is no excuse!

3. LAZINESS: This one kills people the most! There are many variables as to why a person is lazy. Sometimes they’re used to a 9-5 type office job where they start and finish at a set time. Often times these people prefer to slouch on the couch in their spare time. Lazy people have a hard time at the startup phase of an internet marketing business because it takes a lot of focus, effort, and time to build a successful online business.

4. LACK OF MOTIVATION: If you don’t have a deep need to do someting, you probably won’t do it. If you are happy and comfortable with the way things are, you want better things but you don’t need them. In my experience, you need a deep down burning desire to accomplish something and learn internet marketing. If you don’t have that internal drive, need, or fire, get it, find it and search for it.

Many of you have racked up a lot of debt and pain trying to learn internet marketing and I am confident with a few changes you can start on a new path. Perhaps you can take a good look at your situation and decide what the issue really is. What is holding you back from success?  Why every course you buy just sits on the shelf? What can you do differently today to make a change in your life?

If you have been struggling for a long time, perhaps this is the year for you to FOCUS, LEARN, and TAKE ACTION??  I hope this is your year! Good luck to you!!

  • Hi,

One of the main problems I hear which paralyzes people from moving forward is overwhelm. There are so many techniques and trick and ideas. A newbie doesn't know where to beging.

And in addition, often the rags to riches story that the great gurus tell, makes the whole process seem quick and relatively painless. I'm thinking of a PPC guru who talks about how he had to work for 6 whole months until he finally cracked the code and had his first success.

In reality, the road is much longer and we should tell newbies to expect (not accept but expect) failures, mistakes and do-overs. With a more reasonable expectation, taking the first step may not be quite as scary. A newbie won't feel like if they make a mistake, their whole biz is over.

Thank you very much for posting this. It is always useful to realize how much control we have over our success-just do it!

  • PPCMom, what I say, you've hit the nail on the head. Internet marketing isn't easy to get into however, with persistence it can be done. Results don't come easy but I think with little work you can at least make a side income, something equivalent to having a 2nd job and live comfortably.

You're right. Results don't come easy. Thats a great point. With a lot of study, focus, and regular action, you can earn an income online. It comes easy to some people, while others struggle. But I think life is like that - with focus and effort, amazing things can be achieved.
  • Team O
you shouldn't be wasting your efforts Tweeting and blogging about ppc, instead you should be taking advantage of it. Why create extra competition and waste valuable time! Get off the Glue
  • PpcJen
Fair enough point, Team O. Thanks for sharing your thoughts here. Many internet marketers keep quiet about their methods and strategies. I prefer to share mine with readers. I'm not afraid of competition, in fact, I prefer it. I believe there's more than enough money and success to go around. I do enjoy tweeting and blogging about PPC and SEO strategies. But I enjoy putting those strategies into action even more!
  • PPCMom is crazy, that's why. Didn't you know she lives in a jungle with Kangaroo's and Wallby's? Her telephone is just 2 cups on a piece of string.

Like I said - PPCMom is crazy.
  • PpcJen
I live in the Outback - not the jungle, Mr. Barclay. But you're right about my phone. :)
  • Jose
    Thank you Jen :)
  • Another HUGE thing is it's one thing to learn affiliate/internet marketing but another HUGE thing to have the right mindset
  • Great post, Jennifer! It's all so true, and uh - guilty as charged! LOL! The year I started, I made a list of all the crap I bought, just so I could really see the damage - LOL! It was pitiful. No where near what I've heard some people have gotten into - but, enough to slap me in the face! Now, it wasn't all bad - one of them was HORRENDOUS enough for all of them! Oh no, there was another that was, too. *shakes head* One of them was pretty darn good, as out of it grew my idea for My Very Own Mail!! Super groovy.

I think my worst offense here is 1. Focus with 3. Laziness coming in a close second! Now I better go get to work! ;)
  • Great article! You definitely nailed it on the head about how 30 days later pp are frustrated that they haven't made any money. No matter what you purchase, if you don't put some old fashioned elbow grease into it, it isn't going to work. Nothing good comes from laziness.

P.S. I'm much happier in real life than this guy :)
  • Very good point! Elbow Grease does tend to increase chances to success, increase substantially :)
  • Focus, learn and take action!!!!
Sounds like a plan to me!!

You nailed it with you "need a deep down burning desire to accomplish".
There has to be a very good reason WHY you need to keep going when things get tough.

And at some point they will get tough
  • Hey Jen -- Good article. Hope it helps the people who land on your page. The bottom line is focus, focus, focus and action, action, action. Along with a little dose of patience, patience, patience!
  • PpcJen
Oh, Denise, you are so right. In that order, too! I need to focus on being focused - LOL! There are just so many possibilities and opportunities - it's really easy to get sidetracked.
  • what irks me is internet marketers who go for the easiest pickings - other internet marketers. if you're going to follow someone's system, it might help to make sure they've made and continue to make money from selling products to the public. ed dale is a good example of someone worth listening to.
  • PpcJen
I agree Tony. It's difficult for a "newbie" to know who is really successful and who is not. So many of the self-proclaimed Gurus are pretty convincing. I think there is probably some value in what many of them are offering, but to build a solid, stable, long term business, I think you need to invest time and effort into your own education. Either by following the 30 Day Challenge, or a similar legitimate training method. Having said that, I do know many people are "self-taught" - Like Finch of http://FinchSells.com - but I think most of us need a step by step plan and clear instructions. Well, at least I need that! :)
  • The Guru's generally know how exactly to sell themselves to newbies, they know how some people are vulnerable and they know exactly how to generally sway them.. be careful who you trust, always go on word of mouth feedback

Leave it to PPCMom to draw controversy :) jk
  • PpcJen
I guess it can be considered controversial, but I generally like to think that most people have good intentions. They're out to make money online, and they do that by selling products to newbies. Most of what they sell has some merit at some level, but its questionable if the "guru products" are worth all that money. I recommend people avoid the hyped up stuff and stick to learning the basics. Once you're making money, THEN you can look at investing in groovy gadgets, software, etc to make things a bit easier. I agree with you that listening to the recommendations of people you trust is a good guide to follow.
  • My biggest problem is the people who prey on newbies and lie, cheat and steal :)

    PS - when's your next webinar? :)
  • Very harsh but true, there are very few products and sites that actually help affiliates or people new to affiliate/internet marketing. Chances are if someone is e-mailing you something, it benefits them more than you!

It's all about mindset, most of the successful people in affiliate/internet marketing and even in general have the same focus and mindset and act and think alike.

    Just my humble opinion!
  • PpcJen
I guess it is a little harsh. You're right about the mindset!! It reminds me of this post I read on an internet marketing blog a few weeks ago : http://chrisdot.com/general-affiliate-marketing...
  • I never visit that blog, the owner doesn't update it enough :p :D
  • michaelhimself
    really good post Jen!!
  • PpcJen
Thanks Michael! You'll have to get yourself registered at Disqus so you have a nice avatar instead of this guy! LOL! :)
