What do you need?

By PPC Mom

What do you need to be successful?

Perhaps you are brand new to the idea of internet marketing. What information do you want to learn more about? Pay per click, article marketing, SEO?  Or maybe you’ve been around awhile, learned a little, but haven’t taken much action. Why do you think that is? What would make the difference for you?

Let’s start a discussion:

  • Are you brand new or have you been around awhile?
  • What are you working on?
  • What traffic method do you prefer? SEO or PPC?
  • What’s your biggest challenge right now?

I’ll kick off the discussion with my own thoughts: I haven’t been around long. I started my online journey just under a year ago. I feel like I am learning new things every day.  Right now, I am working on SEO affiliate sites, Facebook advertising, and a little bit of Pay Per Click ads here and there.   I get excited about SEO as a traffic method because its FREE! But the results from Pay Per Click ads are instant.   My biggest business challenge right now is lack of knowledge and skill when it comes to landing pages and design.   I’ve also had a few of my campaigns die off completely this week, so I have been busily rebuilding them.

What about you? Where are you at right now?

  • I've been in only a few months. I have been working on SEO and lots of content! Trying to get my visitor rate up there. I just recently started adding some affiliate stuff. I have made one sale, but that's it and it was pretty small.

I have shied away from PPC. I heard early on that it can be great, but it can also quickly eat up a lot of money with little return. How's your experience?

PPC certainly can eat up a lot of money quickly if you aren't careful. I recommend following a detailed plan which can be found in a PPC training forum like AffiliIT or PPC-Coach.
But, I don't recommend doing any of that until you've followed your current path from start to profit (to use Lynn Terry's phrase!). Stick with SEO and content generation as that is long lasting, and will pay off for a long time to come.
    Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Let me start by saying I really enjoyed the interview you did with Lynn Terry -- very inspiring.

Brand new? Yes, I have one affiliate mini-site up that has made a grand total of one sale in 3 months. I'm aware of some issues with it, and I've certainly done a lot of learning, but I really want to start doing more earning than learning :-)

Working on?: I'm getting ready to launch a blog in my niche that will be the flagship site for my business, and I intend to make it the prime source for my affiliate marketing efforts. I have the domain and site hosted; I'm searching for a theme right now.

SEO or PPC? I've been all SEO. My perception of PPC has been that it's scary and a good way to lose a lot of money if you don't know what your doing. Your experience, though, has now gotten me very intrigued with it. Ack! Another shiny object to distract me!

Biggest Challenge? Avoiding shiny objects :-) Well, I'm not sure it's the biggest, but it's one of them. Actually, my biggest challenge is creating enough time to work on my business given that I also have a very demanding, fairly high paying job (that I want to replace ASAP with an online business), a wife and kids, a money pit of a house to take care of, etc.

That's a snapshot for me at the moment. Curious to hear from others.

I agree entirely about the "shiny objects"! Getting sidetracked can be a real problem and de-rail us from our goals before we even realize what has happened. My advice is to stick with what you know for now, follow one project through to profit - THEN - look at adding something new. Persistence pays off, I am told! Let's be persistent!
